hOmemade spaghetti sauce

Kick that jar of spaghetti sauce to the curb...you can make this flavorful recipe with pantry ingredients that will win over any sauce from a jar!
Even though it takes 3 hours to simmer it's super easy! Just throw the ingredients into a pot and simmer...easy peasy.

This is my mom's recipe that I grew up with that I crave whenever I have spaghetti. My friend Lisa has also made an addition of carrots when she makes it which also sounds delicious! Make your own additions and see what you come up with or leave out the meat to make it a marinara sauce...yum!

 1 lb pork sausage
 1 large onion, chopped
 2 cloves garlic, minced
 2 28-ounce crushed tomatoes (or diced)
 6 oz tomato paste
 ¼ cup dried parsley
 1 tbsp brown sugar
 1 tsp salt
 1 ½ tsp dried oregano
 23 sprigs of tyme
 1 bay leaf
 2 cups water

Gather Ingredients...

Brown Meat...

In a large dutch oven or stockpot brown 1 lbs of pork sausage over medium heat until browned.

Drain and return to heat.

Add 1 large chopped onion and 2 cloves of minced garlic to the sausage and cook for 5 Minutesmore until onions start to become transparent.

Simmer...

Stir in 2 28-ounce cans of crushed (or diced) tomatoes, 1 6-ounce can of tomato paste, 1/4 cup of dried parsley, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano, 2-3 sprigs of fresh thyme, 1 bay leaf, and 2 cups of water.

Simmer uncovered for 3 hours until sauce is thickened, stirring occasionally.

Remove thyme sprigs and bay leaf.

Serve...

Serve over spaghetti noodles and top with fresh parmesan cheese.

The sauce goes great over any type of noodle or even with meatballs on a French Bread as a meatball sandwich!

This recipe makes a lot of sauce so it works great as a meal prep dish to use in different ways.
